Due to the rapid advancement in the wireless communication technology and automotive industries, the paradigm of vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) emerges as a promising approach to improve road safety, facilitate vehicle traffic management, and support infotainment applications. In this presentation, we will discuss some recent research activities on VANETs carried out at the University of Waterloo. First, we introduce VeMAC, a novel multichannel TDMA MAC protocol to support efficient one-hop and multi-hop broadcast services on the control channel by using implicit acknowledgments and eliminating the hidden terminal problem. Then, we present a cooperative scheme to improve link reliability. Neighboring nodes cooperate by utilizing unreserved time slots, for retransmission of a packet which failed to reach the target receiver due to a poor channel condition. Following that, we discuss how to place gateways for in-vehicle Internet access via multi-hop vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure links. We want to minimize the total cost of gateway deployment, and guarantee that a vehicle can reach a certain number of gateways, each with a probability greater than a pre-defined threshold. We will end this presentation with a 5-minute video which demonstrates an implementation of the VeMAC protocol and its applications.
Weihua Zhuang has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Waterloo, since 1993, where she is a Professor and a Tier I Canada Research Chair in wireless communication networks. Her current research focuses on resource allocation and QoS provisioning in wireless networks, and on smart grid. She is a co-recipient of several best paper awards from IEEE conferences. Dr. Zhuang is/was the Technical Program Chair for IEEE VTC Fall 2017 and Fall 2016, and the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology (2007-2013). She is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, and an elected member in the Board of Governors and VP Publications of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society.
