1、 Title : Vision, Learning and Applications for Defined Object Detection

Abstract: In this talk, firstly I will give an overview of University of Technology, Sydney; the projects conducted in my research team. Through the introduction of these projects, new PhD students will have an opportunity to learn some research ideas for their future research. Then, I will give a comprehensive overview of our research outcomes in vision and learning for defined object detections. The ability to detect defined objects are the first important step in many computer vision applications such as video surveillance. I will present an experimental study on pedestrian detection using state-of-the-art local feature extraction and boosting based classifiers. A set of demo will be shown to link our research to many applications including vehicle, boat and human detection. As a conclusion, I will show some practical algorithms that can be used in surveillance system in real time.

Short Bio: Dr. Jian Zhang received the BSc. degree from East China Normal University, Shanghai, China, in 1982; the MSc. degree in computer science from Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia, in 1994; and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia, in 1999. From 2004 to July 2011, he was a Principal Researcher and a Project Leader with National ICT Australia, Sydney, and a Conjoint Associate Professor with the School of Computer Science and Engineering, UNSW. He is currently an Associate Professor with the Advanced Analytics Institute, School of software, Faculty of engineering and Information Technology, University of Technology Sydney, Sydney. Dr. Zhang is an IEEE Senior Member. He was Technical Program Chair, 2008 IEEE Multimedia Signal Processing Workshop; Associated Editor, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology (T-CSVT) and Associated Editor, EURASIP Journal on Image and Video Processing.

2、Title: Human Gait Recognition under Various Views

Abstract:
The study of human gait is innate to human interest and pervades many fields. Recently, gait is being used for gender discrimination and age estimation, as well as traditional applications in medical diagnosis and rehabilitation. In a real-world environment, view angle change has been regarded as one of the biggest challenges and unresolved problem to gait recognition as it can change significantly the available visual features for matching. In this talk, we will discuss the core problem caused by the change of viewing angle to gait recognition. The recent outcomes will be presented.

Short Bio: Qiang Wu received the B.Eng. and M.Eng. degrees in electronic engineering from the Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China, in 1996 and 1998, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in computing science from the University of Technology Sydney, Australia, in 2004. He is currently a Senior Lecturer with the School of Computing and Communications, University of Technology Sydney. His research outcomes have been published in several premier international conferences including ECCV, CVPR, ICIP, and ICPR and the major international journals such as IEEE TIP, IEEE TSMC-B, IEEE TCSVT, IEEE TIFS, PR. He also actively participated in several international conference organizations as a chair and program committee such as ICME2012, DICTA2010. Dr. Wu also serves several journals and conferences as reviewer including PR, TIP, TSMC-B, PRL.
